Centralized, Automated Backup, Restore and Recovery for Data Management in Large Heterogeneous Computing Environments

Effective backup and recovery in today's open, distributed client/server computing environment demand a different approach from the centralized, direct-attached solution adopted for a mainframe. ABARS, Automatic Backup and Recovery Software from CommVault Systems, delivers a reliable, safe, and cost-effective solution for centralized, fully automated file system backup, restore, and recovery in open, networked computing environments. By offering our user a wide variety of data management options, ABARS software reduces network bandwidth demand, shortens recovery time and optimizes the investment in backup media.

The ABARS software performs both full or incremental backups. It includes both data and metadata such as file attributes and access rights that are native to the client's network file system (NFS). Scheduling is extremely flexible - administrators can choose to automate backups at predetermined intervals or to initiate manual backups from the CommVault CommServ server. Data can be directed to specific sets of optical and tape media dedicated to a particular client machine or group of clients. Using the concept of virtual machines, parallel paths are established between a client computer and the CommVault CommServ server. This permits data to move at the network's maximum available bandwidth.

Faster, More Efficient Backup, Restore or Recovery

The ABARS software has many advantages over competing backup, restore, and recovery schemes. First, the ABARS proprietary compression algorithm materially reduces the size of the backup thus decreasing the time required to complete a backup. Second, the ABARS restore algorithm significantly speeds the process by skipping old file versions. ABARS restores files by reconstructing data from the most recent incremental backups first, then it works back to the last full backup. That means the information most likely to be needed by a user is available first. Finally, the ABARS restore function works at the single file level - only what is requested is restored, not a whole database like other schemes do.

A full backup is used only to locate and to restore single or multiple files that are not found in any incremental backups. Traditional restore schemes begin with the last full backup then work forward through all the incremental backups. This process takes longer, hogs CPU time and increases network traffic as compared to the ABARS approach.

CommVault ABARS software is designed to magnify the native properties of optical media. ABARS leverages optical's random access capabilities to give you faster access to business critical data and exploits optical's storage density to deliver the price/performance relationship demanded by business today. A DTL tape solution is also offered for those roles where tape media is the preferred answer. In total, ABARS delivers the leading cost-effective, high performance backup solution for the heterogeneous network computing environment.

A Total Solution for Open Environments

ABARS operates on a dedicated CommVault® CommServtm server and is capable of backing up a very wide range of clients including over two dozen variants of UNIX, as well as Microsoft Windows NT, Banyan, Novell, IBM OS/2, and Digital Equipment Corporation VMS operating systems.
